5 High Earning Photography Careers

5 High Earning Photography Careers

So you’ve finished your photography course, you’ve got your camera and you’re wondering, “How can I make some big bucks through this career.” Let’s examine 5 high  high earning photography careers that you may want to consider.

Wedding photographer

Weddings are one of the oldest traditions in human history and photographers are always in demand. Rising divorce rate can be daunting at first, until you realise this means some people are actually having multiple weddings! Wedding photographers typically bill between $1500 and $3000 for the day in the Sydney area. Even at the lower end of the spectrum you’re looking at a minimum $78,000 a year assuming you get 1 booking per month.

Wildlife photographer

Love animals and photography? Wildlife photography seems like a logical step. Wildlife photography can be a pretty difficult career to get ahead in though as there are a lot of people already at it. If you do pursue it, it can go one of two ways: selling your photographs as a freelance photographer (which is most common) or getting hired by a company like discovery or national geographic. Typically as a wildlife photographer you look to make between $30,000 & $100,000.

Events photographer

Photographing events can be a fun and rewarding experience. It can also give you a golden ticket into exclusive parties and is great for networking. You’re typically looking at around $50 an hour, though it can go a lot higher. Party and night club photography is a great place to start. Later corporate and large events like Melbourne cup are a logical next step.

Paparazzi

Paparazzi are despised by many but their work is perhaps the most consumed day in day out of any type of photographer. In this day and age where celebrity ‘goss’ is so readily consumed, paparazzi are like wildlife photographers of the concrete jungle. Basic shots of common celebrities can fetch around $250 a shot; however selling an exclusive one of a kind shot can yield paparazzi millions. For photography purists and for those that photograph for the passion, paparazzi may not be for you.

Fashion photography

From catwalks to events to one-on-one photo-shoots, Fashion photography can be an extremely rewarding career. It presents a nice steady incline of upwards mobility and additional perks on the side. Not to mention unbridled access to celebrities on a personal level. Terry Richardson is a prime example, shooting racy photos of the likes of Kate Upton, Rie Rasmussen and most recently our very own Miranda Kerr. It seems working for the likes of Marc Jacobs, Aldo, Supreme, Tom Ford, and Yves Saint Laurent fetches a pretty penny as according to people with money magazine, Richardson pulled in a total $58 million. Naturally he is the 1% but hey, let’s aim high.
